Ball Transfers for Heavy Rotating Platform Turntables

2026-10-12      View:

Heavy duty ball transfer units are the load-carrying element under industrial turntables and rotating platforms, letting steel plates, machine bases, pallets, and fabrications turn 360° on a low-friction bed. According to Omnitrack, its heavy duty ball transfers handle 8,000 kg (16,000 lb) per unit with a friction ratio below 1:0.005, so less than 0.5% of the conveyed load is needed to start rotation.

The principle is simple: a ring of ball transfer units supports a steel top plate, and a drive motor or a push bar turns it. Ball transfer support beats casters because there is no wheel trail, so the platform rotates about its own center with no scrub radius. Omnitrack designed its first heavy duty unit, the OTSF 4070, in 1954 for British Steel, where it carried 2,000 kg drums of molten steel at 150 °C; those units stayed in service until the plant closed in 1972.

What the Numbers Look Like

Advance Lifts builds powered turntables (TPH high profile, TPL low profile) with edge load capacities from 2,000 to 10,000 lb, platform diameters from 24 to 96 inches, and rotation speeds of 0 to 8.5 RPM, supported on a lifetime-lubricated kingpin bearing. Its low profile TPL tables stand just 3-1/2 inches high, which matters when a rotating platform must sit flush with a conveyor line. LEWCO's PP360 turntable adds full 360° powered rotation for pallet handling, fitted with chain driven live roller or multi-strand chain conveyor tops.

Ball transfer units carry the loads between these turntables. Bosch Rexroth covers sizes from 8 to 120 mm ball diameter for mechanical and plant engineering, and its units run at conveying speeds up to 2 m/s. For heavy machinery platforms, flange-mount and stud-mount units bolt to a base ring, and spring-loaded units absorb shock when a steel plate is dropped onto the platform by crane.

How to Choose Units for a Rotating Platform?

Add the platform load and the dead weight of the top plate, divide by the number of units in the support ring, and rate each unit at least double that figure. Then check temperature and environment: carbon steel units suit dry workshops, stainless steel resists washdown and outdoor service, and Omnitrack's range operates from -50 °C to 260 °C with woollen felt seals on main balls over 12.7 mm and drain channels in the 9000 series to shed debris.

  • Omnitrack heavy duty ball transfers: 8,000 kg per unit, friction ratio below 1:0.005, -50 °C to 260 °C
  • Advance Lifts TPH/TPL turntables: 2,000-10,000 lb edge load, 24-96 inch platforms, 0-8.5 RPM
  • LEWCO PP360: full 360° powered rotation for pallet handling
  • Bosch Rexroth ball transfer units: 8-120 mm sizes, up to 2 m/s conveying speed
  • OTSF 4070: the 1954 British Steel original, 2,000 kg at 150 °C

Ahcell's SP series covers heavy duty flange mounting from an 8 mm to a 90 mm ball (SP-90), and the BTFM range extends to 8,000 kg per unit for the largest turntables, all dimensioned to ISO 15299. Steel fabricators use these units under plate rotation stands and weld positioners; a plate that once needed an overhead crane for every 90° turn now rotates on a ball ring in seconds.
